Our History :
Our school was a brilliant idea in Mr. Mohamed Salama's mind. Mr. Mohamed Salama (Allah bless his soul), who had a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Helwan University in 1971 ,  is the founder of our School. He chose a very unique location in New Maadi to offer great educational facilities to several outskirts such as El Basateen, Maadi, Dar El Salam, Zahraa El Maadi and others. Moreover, the school buildings were prepared and designed under his own supervision. Thanks to Mr. Mohamed Salama, the school became a great educational edifice in Maadi. Then, we started to get the necessary legal documents and permissions to complete the legal procedures. We did our best to get the best equipment, furniture, the computer lab and the science lab. All that was supported by the best educational tools. Finally, The dream came true and our dear school was opened in 1987. Our school started its awesome educational services from 1987 up till now.
Mr. Mohamed Salama gave his wife the responsibility of being the principal of the school in 1987. Mrs. Zeinab Hussein Tawfeek had a Bachelor of Agriculture in 1987. The school started with the pre – elementary stage, meanly with kindergarten and primary one. After that, and due to successful efforts and the increase of the students' numbers, we established a new attached building in 1996. Since that, Zohour El yasmeen Schools had all educational stages: Kindergarten, primary, preparatory and secondary stages. Therefore, the year 1996 was a turning point for our school as it was no longer one school with limited classes but it became a very famous group of schools in Maadi and its nearby places. For that, we pray Allah to bless Mr. Mohamed Salama's soul as he was the one who thought, planned and designed that great educational edifice.
Students and their families are full of pride to our schools. Elites of best students graduated from our schools. They became role models to other schools, students, and to their society. Some of our best students are Ahmed Ataaf, the first student of the directorate in the secondary stage, and the two girls Rania Othman and Mariem Mohamed Saleh who are the first students in Cairo Governorate in preparatory three. There are also doctors, accountants, teachers, and scientists each in his own field. Mr. Salama Mohamed Salama, the school principal who got his masters in teaching English from the American University, is also a graduate of our schools.

         The school really appreciates the teaching staff who are very professional and efficient. They exert great efforts  to prepare successful  generations who are of great help to themselves , their society , and their nation. It is an honour that our schools got the Award of  the National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation  of Education, and the International School Award  from the British Council. The curriculum taught at the Windrose Academy is that of The National Curriculum for England and is divided into Key Stages.

The National Curriculum provides a broad, structured framework which outlines the expected levels of achievement during a child's educational journey. As part of the structure there is a programme of student assessments and evaluations to ensure that pupils are working towards levels of attainment appropriate to their age and capability.

Within all areas of school life, attention is paid to the development of aspects linked to the GEMS Core Values. For example: Leadership skills are a part of the daily life at Windrose Academy. House captains and their vice captains are part of this but children are also taught how to take a lead in their learning, to show initiative and be responsible, whilst at all times showing consideration for others.

The Curriculum

Early Years
Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1
FS1 to Year 2

The Early Years programme for children aged three to five is called the Foundation Stage. It is designed to prepare children to begin the National Curriculum for England, which begins around the age of five in Key Stage 1 and continues through Key Stage 5.

The child's progress is closely monitored and assessed against appropriate age performance standards. Every encouragement and help is provided for children to attain their full potential.

Focused on whole-child development, proper attention is given to the social development, skills, knowledge and understanding that children need to interact efficiently in a complex and changing world. Children in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 are introduced to foundations in Reading, Writing, Science, Mathematics and Information and Communications Technology through a system of practical applications, supported by a positive and stimulating learning environment.

Children learn best when they actively participate in the learning process. Learning through structured play and a regular programme of visits forms an integral part of the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 curriculum.

Supported by a well-resourced library and computer facilities, students in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 are encouraged to explore and develop their natural abilities and talents.

By the end of Year 2, all students will have developed social skills and a love of learning, as well as be able to read and write, and use simple mathematics at a level appropriate for their age or beyond. They would have gained a significantly improved understanding of our world through knowledge of elementary history, geography and science. The overall educational experience is enriched with exposure to Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE). Students will also develop their creative talents in art and music alongside their physical development through dance, games and gymnastic activities.

Primary School: Key Stage 2
Year 3 to Year 6

Students in this programme follow Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum for England, which continues to build on the foundations that are established in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.

Ongoing assessment ensures that each student's progress and development are continuous and meet predetermined standards. We encourage students to think independently, use their initiative and to participate in a meaningful and active manner in the learning process. At the end of Key Stage 2, students study for University of Cambridge Checkpoint Examinations in English, maths and science.

The core academic curriculum includes instruction in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Information and Communications Technology. Students are introduced in Year 3 to foreign languages ​​such as French. The overall education experience is enhanced and supplemented with instructions in Art, Music, Physical Education, and Citizenship / Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE).

A selection of extra-curricular activities broadens the opportunities for students to enhance their natural abilities and to challenge themselves through development of new interest areas. Extra-curricular activities may include Drama, Choir, Computers, Art and Design, a variety of sports activities and a number of school clubs.

Throughout the educational experience at Windrose Academy, students are involved in learning the practical use and application of Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

Development of leadership qualities and skills are put into practical application in Key Stage 2 providing each student the opportunity to share class and school responsibilities that nurture organisational skills, co-operation, accountability and team spirit.

By the end of Year 6, all students will have experienced a well-rounded education and have developed a strong character, articulate expression, confidence, and be well-prepared for their secondary education.

Middle School: Key Stage 3
Years 7 to 9, known as Key Stage 3, follow the National Curriculum for England which includes the subjects: English, English Literature, Mathematics, Humanities, Sciences, Computer Sciences, a selection of second languages, Art and Design, Design and Technology, Drama and Dance, Music, Physical Education and Citizenship / Personal, Social and Health Education are also offered.

Senior School: Key Stage 4 and 5
Year 10 to Year 13

In Key Stage 4 (Years 10 to 11), the IGCSE curriculum is introduced. A range of subjects, catering for a variety of academic needs and interests, are offered. These include the compulsory subjects of English, Mathematics and Physical Education. Optional subjects include ICT, French, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, Business Studies, Accounts, Economics, Art and Drama.

During the final two years of school, students sit for the AS and A levels. A wide range of subjects are offered which assist in preparing students for higher studies or a multitude of career opportunities. Key leadership qualities are very important in these senior years. Students in these classes will be challenged to accept and develop responsibilities as leaders and citizens of the world.

Teaching Assistants

Teaching assistants are available throughout the school and provide support within the classrooms. They work under the direction of the class teacher to ensure that the curriculum is accessible for all pupils. From Foundation Stage 1 through to Year 2, full time Teaching Assistants work with each class. This helps to ensure that all children in these year groups have excellent opportunities to access each activity which is on offer and to achieve their full potential. From Year 3 to Year 13 teaching assistants are timetabled to work across the specialised classes.

We are staffed with a staff whose nationalities and backgrounds allow all of our pupils the benefit of their many and varied experiences. Yet a common thread running through every teacher in Windrose Academy is a commitment to offering each child the chance to grow, learn and thrive in a constructive and supportive environment.

At Windrose Academy we have a strong focus upon academic excellence and develop pupils' language, mathematical and analytical skills first and foremost. However, there is more to life than academia and by encouraging pleasure and joy in the pursuit of the arts, music, drama, design and sport we allow all of our pupils to experience success and achievement in school life.

An often forgotten set of qualities is those associated with relationships, manners and standards. Our pupils are taught the importance of good manners, how vital it is to develop and maintain a good personal reputation and learn the standards that are expected of everyone in modern society.

I have been living and working in the education sector in Egypt since 2011 and enjoy the rich and varied culture of this wonderful country. The passion that people here have for education and the strong support for family values ​​are two major assets of the Egyptian people. As a father to a young son I know the desire that we parents feel to give our children the best that we can whilst encouraging them to grow, learn, think for themselves and develop respectful attitudes to others' beliefs, cultures and values. At Windrose Academy we look to foster a community of genuinely caring adults who are deeply interested in the learning, progress and welfare of every pupil and who strive for this goal in all that they do.

Admission Procedure
Registration and admission for the academic year starting in September opens in the spring term each year. Admission depends upon existing vacancies. The minimum permissible age for Foundation Stage 1 is three years 6 months on or before 1st October. There will be an interactive assessment session with the teacher for Foundation Stages 1 & 2. For all other classes, admission is granted on the basis of an entrance test usually in Mathematics and English. Placement will depend on a recommendation and positive school report from the previous academic year.

Admission can be granted throughout the year in other classes and is subject to the availability of places and the successful completion of a range of assessment tests.
